The Red One camera – start here

Hi, thanks for checking out this website. The information on this site is taken from a lecture I gave to university students through 2010 – 2011

I have decided to put it up on the web simply because there is so little info out there on how to get up and running on the camera quickly.

This website can’t possibly replace the experience of actual hands on learning with the camera but hopefully, if you take the time to read through all of the pages and you are an experienced camera operator, you should have enough knowledge to hire a Red camera for the first time. Ideally though I would recommend a practical course with the Red One so that you can fully explore it’s capabilities and requirements.

In addition, this info will prepare you really well for Red’s newer camera systems such as the Epic and the Scarlet as the workflows for these cameras are very similar.

This is an independent website and is not affiliated with Red in any way so please don’t take the information presented as gospel, I will do my best to keep the site up to date but technology changes so quickly I may not be able to keep up! So please do your own additional research before considering shooting on Red camera systems. The best place for the latest info and news is Red User.

Throughout these pages I’m going to be comparing the Red One to the Canon DSLR’S as most of us have now used these cameras for video and they are often compared due to the large sensor sizes.

I’m not going to try and blow your minds with technical info as all of that is available on-line. Believe me you can spend hours, days indeed probably weeks debating the Red Camera System and plenty do on the Red User forums.

Having said that we do have to get a little bit technical to get the best out of the system and a good understanding of how the bayer pattern Red Mysterium sensor works is essential for post production.

As a film maker I want the best tool for the job, sometimes that’s the Red One camera sometimes that might be a DSLR I hope to give a balanced view of the pluses and minuses of the system so that you can make an informed unbiased, camera choice.

Happy shooting.
